Background of the Study

Breakfast is widely regarded as the most important meal of the day, providing essential nutrients that fuel cognitive function and overall well-being. However, breakfast skipping has become a common practice among adolescents, particularly secondary school students, due to factors such as time constraints, socio-economic challenges, and poor dietary habits. Research indicates that skipping breakfast negatively affects cognitive abilities, including memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills, which are crucial for academic performance.

In Kaduna State, the rising prevalence of breakfast skipping among students has raised concerns among educators and health professionals. Socio-economic factors, cultural practices, and changing lifestyle patterns contribute to this trend, potentially affecting students' ability to learn and perform well academically. Studies have shown that students who eat breakfast regularly tend to have better academic performance, improved concentration, and higher energy levels compared to those who skip breakfast. However, little research has been conducted on the direct correlation between breakfast skipping and academic performance in Kaduna State secondary schools. This study seeks to fill this gap by assessing the impact of breakfast skipping on students’ cognitive abilities and overall academic performance, thereby informing policy decisions and dietary recommendations.

Statement of the Problem

Despite increasing awareness of the importance of breakfast, a significant number of secondary school students in Kaduna State continue to skip breakfast. The reasons for this include lack of time, economic constraints, and unhealthy eating habits. The effects of this practice on academic performance remain largely underexplored within the context of Kaduna State.

Poor academic performance is a growing concern, and factors affecting students’ cognitive functions, such as nutrition, must be thoroughly investigated. If skipping breakfast has a detrimental effect on academic achievement, interventions should be implemented to promote proper dietary habits among students. This study seeks to examine whether there is a significant relationship between breakfast skipping and academic performance among secondary school students in Kaduna State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To determine the prevalence of breakfast skipping among secondary school students in Kaduna State.

  2. To analyze the relationship between breakfast skipping and academic performance.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving students’ nutrition and academic performance.

Research Questions

  1. How prevalent is breakfast skipping among secondary school students in Kaduna State?

  2. What is the impact of breakfast skipping on academic performance?

  3. What interventions can be implemented to promote breakfast consumption among students?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant relationship between breakfast skipping and lower academic performance.

  2. Students who consume breakfast regularly perform better academically than those who skip it.

  3. Nutritional interventions aimed at increasing breakfast consumption will improve students’ academic performance.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on secondary school students in Kaduna State. It will examine their breakfast consumption patterns and how these relate to academic performance. The study may be limited by self-reported data, which could introduce recall bias, and external factors such as socio-economic status and parental influence, which may also affect academic performance.
